E3 announcements looking good this year

I know that people probably say that every year, but I’m excited. Between Monkey Island, MGS5, Dragon Age and others, I ‘m cautiously optimistic about what’s coming.

I can’t compete with the regular gaming sites, and I’m far too busy to even aggregate everything interesting into one place, so you’ll just have to go check out the usual suspects.

In the meantime, checkout these screens from The Beatles: Rock Band

I’m hanging out for Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect 2, Final Fantasy XIII (coming out for X-Box 360 too; can’t remember if you enjoy JRPGs or not), Final Fantasy XIII Versus and Persona for PSP.

Also, Heavy Rain for PS3 looks interesting. The director’s previous game, Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy, was an interesting, but rather failed experiment in combining cinematic story elements and gameplay, which actually meant lots of quick time events and a story that started of brilliant but devolved into Cthulhu versus Terminator versus I don’t know what the hell was going on.

Still no sign of Rock Band: Nirvana 🙂

I guess I don’t mind JRPGs, but things that draw other people (character design, highly abstracted combat systems, over-the-top story lines and characters) actually put me off. I like all that stuff in anime, but not in games — go figure.

Versus looks like little more than a cynical fanservice moneygrab. I saw the cinematic trailer a while back and was nonplussed. But since I don’t really care for the FF franchise that much, it doesn’t bother me at all.

Looking around, a bunch of the games I wanted to try at release are now priced more reasonably (Alone in the Dark, Saints Row 2, Prince of Persia) and there’s also DLC available that I want to check out. It’s a good time to be a gamer on a budget 🙂
