BSG 4.5 trailer

No commentary on this just yet. It’s just a teaser, and there’s no real information that I managed to absorb to say what they intend to do with the conclusion to what is probably one of the best sci-fi series in a long, long time.

I think I’m going to organise a marathon rewatch soon. Anyone interested?

Fullmetal Review

I’ve just finished watching Fullmetal Alchemist, an anime which was recommended to me in my search for a varied experience with things steampunk. While I didn’t find what I was looking for (while technology is vaguely Industrial Revolution, that’s not the thrust of science), I did come to appreciate FMA as an exploration of abuse of technology, and the importance of human connection.

In brief, FMA is the story of two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, who seek the Philosopher’s Stone, an all-powerful alchemical substance that will allow them to circumvent the Law of Equivalent Exchange and restore their bodies, irreperably damaged when they tried to alchemically resurrect their dead mother.

What follows is an odyssey as they discover that they tread in the footsteps of many others that seek the Philosophers stone, only to be killed before they achieve their objective.

Mummy trepidations

I’m a fan of the Mummy series. Had an absolute blast with the first movie, and while The Mummy Returns had some issues with sequelitis, I’m a big enough fan of the pulp genre to forgive all but the most blatant transgressions.

So, I was a little surprised to find that I hadn’t found out about Tomb of the Dragon Emperor earlier. It features a change of setting and subject matter (we’re no longer in Egypt hunting, er being hunted by, mummies). Instead, we’re off to China to save the world from a resurrected sorcerer-emperor. Sounds good on paper, but I do have reservations.

Happy Hogswatch

Just finished watching Hogfather. The adaptation is great. If you haven’t read the book, you should; if you have read it, then you need to see the movie. It’s almost entirely faithful, and there are no deviations, only omissions that had to be made for the sake of brevity.
